Big Bear offers terrific hiking for a range of abilities, including the flat but stunning 1.9-mile Bluff Lake Reserve Loop trail, located 30 minutes from town. Seasoned trekkers should also consider the more challenging hike up to Bertha Peak via Holcomb Valley Road, a 2.8-mile excursion about 30 minutes from town featuring a steep final ascent. Lake vistas at the top are, however, definitely worth the effort.

Big Bear Village is home to all sorts of eateries, but one of the impressive standouts is the Himalayan Restaurant, which offers outdoor patio seating as well as indoor dining and just fabulous food. Set aside a little time after dinner to make the 10-minute stroll down to the lakefront for sunset. And on clear nights, the open sky above Big Bear Lake is a tremendous location for stargazing.
