Tahiti is home to the French Polynesian capital city Papeete, but visitors should certainly consider some time at the end of the road in the sleepy village of Teahupoo, about an hour's drive from the international airport. Teahupoo Tahiti Surfari is a terrific activity provider for those looking to snorkel over healthy coral reef ecosystems, explore Tahiti's remote Fenua Aihere region -- accessible only by boat -- or for those hoping to surf the world-famous Teahupoo surf break. In fact, owner Cindi Drollet frequently takes big name pros out to surf the legendary break when the swell is right.

Stayed
You wont find any hotels in Teahupoo, but you will find the lovely A Hi'o To Mou'a, a home stay option hosted by owners Hitinui and Aimatarii Levy. The three-bedroom house offers gorgeous views of lush Vaiavaro Valley, where Hitinui's grandfather raised cows and goats and guests can stroll today alongside friendly horses -- who especially enjoy being fed ripe guava. The modern home has a fully-equipped kitchen as well as a comfortable open-air dining lanai, and Aimatarii is a tremendous chef, so amazing meals and extraordinary Tahitian hospitality come standard.

Culinary fans will definitely want to consider a street food tour with Tahiti Food Tours, owned by Heimata Hall, who worked for a time in some of Hawaii's most popular kitchens. Hall created the street food tours to showcase Tahiti's favorite local foods, including the legendary Casse-Croute Chow Mein, a popular sandwich made with a french baguette and Chinese noodles. Hall introduces tour goers to all sorts of small shops as well street-side vendors and ends tours with a fabulous meal at Pai Bistro & Vins -- a cutting-edge Papeete eatery serving contemporary Tahitian cuisine.
